The BBC is to play a five second clip of a song mocking the death of Baroness Thatcher three days before her funeral.
The anti-Thatcher anthem Ding Dong the Witch is Dead has seen a surge in popularity since Baroness Thatcher’s death and looks set to retain a top slot when the Official Chart Show airs on Sunday.
The BBC said that instead of playing the song in full it will play a short clip and a reporter from the station's news programme Newsbeat will explain why it has risen up the charts.
Ben Cooper, the controller of BBC Radio 1, yesterday said the corporation had been stuck between a "rock and a hard place".
He said: "I find the campaign to promote the song in response to the death of Baroness Thatcher as distasteful as anyone and I've thought long and hard about how to respond.
